From the README file:
XaoS is a fast portable real-time interactive fractal zoomer. It displays the Mandelbrot set (among other escape time fractals) and allows you zoom smoothly into the fractal. Various coloring modes are provided for both the points inside and outside the selected set. In addition, switching between Julia and Mandelbrot fractal types and displaying planes is provided. The first version was a poorly written Mandelbrot view by Thomas later modified by Jan to support high frame-rate zooming. Other additions were later made including autopilot (for those of you without drivers licenses), palette changing, PNG saving, and fractal inversion.More info is available from the XaoS web site
Verision 3.0 was known to work w/ 8 1/2 but not with rio. We have ported both 3.0 and the latest version (3.1) to plan9 3rd/4th Ed.
XaoS was used to make the images for our Plan9 powerwall . Now that XaoS runs on the 3rd/4th Ed. we plan on running it directly on the machines rather than just using them to display static images.
The port to the 4th Ed. now supports screen depths > 8 bit.

Note this patch only works for 8 bit screen depth.
